First Heartbeat

As many as one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, yet people rarely talk openly about this often life-changing loss

In her brave and unflinching film, journalist Lisa Francesca Nand enlists the help of her husband David to make a video diary, recorded since they first starting trying for a baby five years ago. Sometimes heartbreaking but often upbeat and even funny at times, we follow the couple as they cope with several miscarriages and eventually find a treatment that helps them.

Lisa dives headlong into research to try to find out why miscarriages happen and to see if they can be prevented. Finding little support out there, she makes friends with women online and talks to them about how miscarriage has impacted their lives.

Lisa’s story echoes those of many women who have had miscarriages and who, like Lisa, feel their story hasn’t been told. The film asks why we have such a culture of silence about the first twelve weeks of pregnancy and why we don’t talk about something that affects so many people. A moving insight into one of our great taboos.
